R U OK?

R U OK?
Hey you! Yes you. How are you doing? Like, really doing? Here at Jetpilot we want to check in on our community to ask, R U OK? And to remember, it ain’t weak to speak. Have your workmates noticed you might be acting a bit off, maybe a bit more stressed or irritable than normal; perhaps hitting the cans a bit more than normal and a bit more often; or perhaps even withdrawn and quietened down completely?

Or you’ve noticed this of one of your mates. This might be the perfect time to think tools down, talk up. But how do you approach this?

It doesn’t need to be daunting to have that initial conversation. Maybe it’s a simple – “mate, do you wanna go for a coffee?” or more straightforward “I’ve noticed (something that’s concerning you) lately. Anything you want to talk about?”

Once you’ve asked the question, are you ok, now it’s time to listen. Sometimes this is all the person needs. Someone to talk to and someone to listen to them. It’s ok not to know the answers and you probably won’t. It’s not about trying to fix the problem. Let the person speak and just be a set of ears to listen and hear them out. Getting stuff off your chest can be a hard conversation to have but it really can be life changing.

Next is encouraging your mate to take some form of action. This could be finding something to help them unwind and perhaps seeking out professional help. Sometimes the conversation is too big for an individual or family to take on alone. Remember there’s always professional support and if there’s a chance of risk, please seek expert help as soon as possible.

Don’t forget to check in with your mates afterwards too. Maybe just touch base a couple weeks later and let them know you’ve been wondering how they’re doing. Your genuine care and concern will be noticed and may be life changing. Check in how you’re feeling also – and remember you can’t pour from an empty cup.

To help initiate these important mental health conversations, we’ve partnered with LIVIN and Workwearhub with the exclusive LIVIN x Jetpilot Tools Down, Talk Up tee. Wear it at your jobsite to help kickstart life changing conversations around mental health. Look after yourself and your mates. Not just today but every day.
