You Have Questions? We Have Answers!

What is the best 3 person towable tube?

For a mixed crew of grommets and adults, the Wing 3: built-in angled side wings for stability, a full nylon cover with a zipper over a heavy-gauge PVC bladder, and double webbing foam handles with padded knuckle guards. For riders who want to skim and slide, the Skimmer 3: 840D nylon cover, 0.7mm PVC bladder, neoprene grip zones, pull-up straps and bright high-vis colours. The Freeride 3 and the rocket-shaped Blast Off 3 are for a crew that wants to get flung.

Can a jet ski pull a 3 person tube?

Yes. A ski pulls a three-person tube harder and tighter than most family boats. In NSW and Queensland the ski carries a driver with a PWC licence and an observer at all times, everyone on the tube wears an Australian Standard approved life jacket, and the tube rides at least 7 metres behind. Three riders is a real load, so run the rope rated for it and read the towing rules first.

How many people can you tow at once?

In NSW, three. That is the state cap on people towed at one time, which makes a 3 person tube the biggest crew you can legally pull there. Queensland runs the same crew, licence and life jacket requirements with its own distances off; other states set their own, so check yours before the season's first run.

What tow rope do I need for a 3 person tube?

The 1-4 Person Tube Rope: 60 ft of two-strand PE with an 1882 kg breaking strain, designed for towing up to four riders. Add the Towable Bungee Cord, rated at 1882 kg for 1 to 4 person towables, between the rope and the tube's quick-connect hook so the snatch goes into the bungee, not the crew on the tube. Wake ropes are for riders, not tubes.

Is a 3 person tube good for kids?

It is the family tube. The Wing 3's angled side wings keep it planted, the Skimmer 3's high-vis colours make it easy to spot from the wheel, and pull-up straps get a grommet back on without a shoulder from the deckie. Every kid on it wears a kids life jacket sized to the kid, done up on dry land; an adult vest cinched down is not a kids vest.

2 person or 3 person tube?

Count the crew, not the kids. Two riders who want speed and whip: a 2 person tube planes faster and reacts harder behind a ski. Three riders, or two plus a spare rotating through: the 3 person. A 3 person tube with two on it rides fine; a 2 person tube with three on it is a rope-rating problem and a rule problem.

What is the difference between the Skimmer, Wing, Freeride and Blast Off?

Shape. The Skimmer 3 is a flat deck you lie on, with an easy-boarding design and neoprene grip zones, built to slide. The Wing 3 has built-in angled side wings for stability. The Freeride 3 is the heavy-duty full-nylon-cover all-rounder with a POV camera mount. The Blast Off 3 is a rocket with wings, three riders in a row, built to be whipped.

The full rundown on 3 Person Towables & Ski Tubes

3 person tow tubes for the whole crew

Three riders, one tube, one deckie counting heads. A 3 person tow tube is the size families settle on: big enough to rotate the grommets through, stable enough for a nervous first-timer, and still light enough for a ski or a family boat to whip. Every tube here is a heavy-gauge PVC bladder inside a nylon cover, with double webbing foam handles behind padded knuckle guards, a reinforced tow system and a quick-connect hook: clip it on, swap riders, go again.

The four shapes

Skimmer 3 — the slider. A rugged 840D nylon cover over a 0.7mm PVC bladder, padded handles and knuckle guards, neoprene grip zones, an easy-boarding design with pull-up straps, and bright high-vis colours so the driver can see the crew on the tube from the wheel.
Wing 3 — the stable one. Built-in angled side wings, a full nylon cover with a zipper and a heavy-gauge PVC bladder. The tube for riders of all ages, and the one the nervous cousin agrees to.
Freeride 3 — the all-rounder. Heavy-duty full nylon cover, heavy-gauge PVC bladder, a reinforced tow system with a quick-connect hook, and a POV camera mount, so the argument about who fell off first gets settled at the ramp.
Blast Off 3 — the rocket. Three riders in a row on a 0.65mm PVC bladder, wings for stability, and a shape that swings out wide as soon as the driver puts the wheel over.

Behind the boat or behind the ski

Behind a boat, the Wing and the Freeride ride flat and predictable, the deckie watches three faces instead of one, and the laps go all arvo. Behind a ski, the Skimmer and the Blast Off are the ones to run: lighter shapes that get up on the plane fast and swing hard on the turn. Either way, three riders is a load the rope has to be rated for, so it is the 1-4 Person Tube Rope, 60 ft with an 1882 kg breaking strain, and the Towable Bungee Cord clipped in front of the tube so the snatch of every swing goes into the bungee. Both are on tow ropes and tie downs. Two riders who want it faster and looser are better on a 2 person tow tube, and the full range from single-rider to four-person is on tow tubes and ski biscuits.

The rules, straight

Three riders means three Australian Standard AS 4758 approved life jackets, worn, before the rope goes tight. Level 50S is the tow-sports vest and the minimum; Level 50 is the same float in a high-vis colourway, for the water where your state calls for it. A grommet wears a kids life jacket sized to the kid, buckled on dry land. In NSW and Queensland the towing vessel carries a driver and an observer the whole time, the driver on a ski holds a PWC licence, the tube sits at least 7 metres back, and you keep the set distances from swimmers, dive flags and other craft. NSW caps it at three people towed at once, which is this tube exactly, and stops towing at sunset. Read the NSW and Queensland tubing and towing rules and the Australian life jacket regulations guide, then check your own state.

Three on the tube is the family number, and in NSW it is the legal one. Fill the observer's seat before you fill the tube.
