Caps and hats built for the water, worn everywhere else

A good cap is the hardest-working thing in a summer kit. It keeps the glare off the water out of your eyes at seven in the morning, covers the helmet hair at the pub at seven at night, and tells anyone at the ramp which scene you are from without a word. Most of the range is cotton canvas or cotton twill with high-density embroidery or a woven badge up front, an adjustable closure at the back and a curved-peak A-frame in between. The sun hats are a different job, and the rated ones say so on the product page.

Snapbacks, clipbacks and the five-panel

The Corp, Staple, Pulse Streamliner, Tribal, Now and All Star snapbacks are the everyday lids: structured six-panel crowns in cotton canvas or twill, a curved peak on most, a flat peak on the all-black Darkside, and a plastic snap at the back. The Vault Snapback swaps cotton for water-repellent tech laser mesh, so spray on the way to the podium does not soak through. The Raptor Clipback runs a high A-frame with a curved peak and stripe panelling round the crown; the Factory Clipback stacks woven patches across the crown and closes with a leather strap and metal adjuster. The Star Strap Back is acid-wash canvas with a metal closure, and the Move 5 Panel is the flatter, lower-profile cut in a contrast panelled colourway with a webbing strap and clip.

Surf caps, unstructured caps and the collabs

The JTPLT Staple Surf Cap is a six-panel in 100% recycled polyester with a plastic snapback, the cap that lives in the car for the beach. The JTPLT x Tom Hadley Surf Cap puts his four-colour screen print front and centre, and the JTPLT x Biffy is 100% cotton corduroy on an unstructured six-panel with a metal clasp, worn-in from the first wear. The Unstructured Cap and the Ladies Unstructured Cap are the low-profile, soft-crown option in 100% cotton with a contrast peak or 3D embroidery, and the Jet-Lite Workwear Cap is 100% stretch Jet-Lite quick-dry fabric with a recycled plastic snap and peak, site to ramp without changing.

Bucket hats, boonies, wide brims and the legionnaire

When the sun is the problem, the brim is the answer. The Keepin Local Rev Bucket and the Kids Reversible Bucket Hat give you two looks in one hat. The Boonie Twill and Boonie Nylon Short Brim are the performance bucket hats: a full-circle short brim that covers the neck without getting in the way, a drawcord with toggle so it stays put, and drainage and airflow holes for the sesh that runs past midday. Sun protection, straight

Only the Jet-Lite Wide Brim Hat and the Venture Legionnaire Cap carry a UV 50+ rating, and it is listed on their product pages. A cap keeps the glare out of your eyes; a boonie or bucket hat covers the neck; a legionnaire covers the ears as well. Everything rated across the range sits on UPF sun protection, and a pair of boat and jet ski sunglasses handles the glare a peak cannot.

Fit

Nearly every cap and hat here is one size fits most, with a snap, clip, strap or drawcord to dial it in; the Fueled Straw Hat comes in S/M and L/XL, and the size guide has the measurements. On the ski, pick the one with a chin strap. A cap with nothing holding it on is a cap you will watch float away the first time you pin it.
