At what age can a baby wear a life jacket?

When one fits, and that is about size, not birthdays. The Cause Infant is sized 1–2: do the buckles up, lift gently at the shoulders, and if the jacket slides past the chin it is too big. Your state's marine authority also has its own advice on babies aboard, so read that before the first trip.

Every jacket on this page is approved to Australian Standard AS 4758 in size 1–2. Most colourways are Level 50S, the same level the rest of the family wears for the ski, the wake and the tube; one high-vis colourway is Level 50 for waters where the state requires it. The level is marked on each product and your state's rules decide which one your water needs, so check the regulations guide before you head out. Plenty of what is sold for babies in the water is a swim aid with no standard behind it. This is not that.

Two builds, same jacket

The standard Cause Infant carries a safety pillow behind the head. The No Pillow version drops the pillow for a lower profile. Both use soft neoprene, Flex Lite Ultra on most colourways, a two-buckle closure with adjustable webbing and a foam core, so the jacket stays where you put it on a kid who will not.

Fit first

Size 1–2 covers most babies and young toddlers, but fit is what counts, not age. Do both buckles up on dry land and pull the webbing snug, then lift gently at the shoulders. If the jacket rides up past the chin, it is too big. The size guide has the chest measurement. Before the first trip

Put the jacket on at home first, on dry land, and let them get used to it before there is water involved. Your state's marine authority has its own advice on babies aboard, and it is worth reading before the boat leaves the ramp. After a salt day, rinse the jacket in fresh water and dry it out of the sun.
