Infant life jackets: the Cause Infant and the Paddle Pal Splash, approved for the smallest crew
Every jacket on this page is approved to Australian Standard AS 4758: the Cause Infant in size 1–2 and the Paddle Pal Splash swim vest in size 2–6. They are Level 50S, the same level the rest of the family wears for the ski, the wake and the tube; one Cause Infant colourway is high-vis Level 50 for waters where the state requires it. The level is marked on each product and your state's rules decide which one your water needs, so check the regulations guide before you head out. Plenty of what is sold for babies in the water is a swim aid with no standard behind it. This is not that.
Two builds of the Cause Infant
The standard Cause Infant carries a safety pillow behind the head. The No Pillow version drops the pillow for a lower profile. Both use soft neoprene, Flex Lite Ultra on most colourways, a two-buckle closure with adjustable webbing and a foam core, so the jacket stays where you put it on a kid who will not.
The Paddle Pal Splash, for the 2–6 size
The Paddle Pal Splash is the swim vest for the toddler who has outgrown the Cause Infant: a 100% EcoPrene outer with a soft polyester lining that does not chafe, Freelite buoyancy foam, a design that supports the neck and head, and a child-safe lock buckle they cannot pop open themselves. It is approved to AS 4758 Level 50S, so it is a life jacket first and a swimming aid second, for the pool, the beach and the boat.
Fit first
Size 1–2 covers most babies and young toddlers and the Paddle Pal Splash runs 2–6, but fit is what counts, not age. Do the buckles up on dry land and pull the webbing snug, then lift gently at the shoulders. If the jacket rides up past the chin, it is too big. The size guide has the chest measurement. Before the first trip
Put the jacket on at home first, on dry land, and let them get used to it before there is water involved. Your state's marine authority has its own advice on babies aboard, and it is worth reading before the boat leaves the ramp. After a salt day, rinse the jacket in fresh water and dry it out of the sun.
