How to Wear a Life Jacket?

Getting ready to tear it up on a jetski, nail some tricks on a wakeboard, or just chill on a boat? Whatever your vibe, rocking a life jacket is key. At Jetpilot, we're all about keeping you safe while you have a blast on the water. Here’s your guide on how to wear a life jacket and why it’s a big deal.

Why Life Jackets Matter

Life jackets, or Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), are lifesavers, plain and simple. They keep you floating if you end up in the drink, cutting the risk of drowning, which is a huge cause of boating deaths. The right life jacket will keep your head above water and help you stay safe if things go sideways.

How to Wear a Life Jacket

Picking the Right Size

First up, make sure you get the right size. Check the label for your weight and chest size. A life jacket that’s too big or too small is a no-go. When you zip it up, there should be about 5-10cm of space. Neoprene jackets stretch when wet, so they should fit tight on land and comfortably in the water.

Putting It On

Once you’ve got the right size, put on the jacket and do up all the straps, buckles, and zippers. Everything should be snug. To check the fit, raise your arms and have a mate lift the jacket by the shoulders. If it rides up over your ears, it’s too loose. Adjust the straps or try a different size. In shallow water, lean back and see if your chin stays above the water. If not, tighten it up or find one with more buoyancy.

Keeping Your Jacket in Good Nick

Always check your life jacket for rips, busted parts, or loss of buoyancy. If it’s looking rough, it’s time for a new one. Keeping your jacket in top shape means it’ll be ready when you need it.

When to Wear It

Put on your life jacket before you hop in the boat. Also, wear it in clear water deeper than 12 feet, in murky water where you can’t see your feet, or in flowing water. These spots can get risky fast, and a life jacket can be a lifesaver.

Types of Life Jackets

Foam-Filled Life Jackets: Always buoyant and ready to go, perfect for nearshore action.

Inflatable Life Jackets: Lightweight and comfy, these inflate when they hit the water or when you pull a cord. Great for offshore but need regular checks.

Hybrid Life Jackets: These mix foam and inflatable tech, giving you comfort and buoyancy. Versatile and perfect for various water activities.

Looking After Your Jacket

Regularly check for any damage and make sure it fits right each time you use it. Store it in a dry, ventilated spot and keep it away from extreme heat. Good maintenance means your life jacket will always be ready to roll.

Stay Safe Out There

Wearing a life jacket isn’t optional—it’s a must. By knowing how to wear it right and keeping it in good shape, you can enjoy your water adventures safely.
